What is the Parry Sound identity?

Do you say See-guin or Say-gwin, Supper or Dinner? University of Toronto linguistics professor Sali Tagliamonte wants to know through a short dialect survey. The survey is part of the project Fishing For Surveys: From Students To Seniors. Tagliamonte says pronunciation and word choice can be different among different age groups.

Tagliamonte will be presenting at The Museum On Tower Hill on Friday afternoon on language and how it relates to the history and culture of Parry Sound. She says she hopes to be able to share a preliminary glimpse of the results of the survey. Tagliamonte is also looking for stories about life in Parry Sound. Parry Sound High School students and The Museum on Tower Hill will be conducting interviews until May 18th. Tagliamonte says while it’s easy for an older person to share stories, she’s also interested in what younger residents have to say.

Tagliamonte says from stories she can record information on history, industry and how social networks operate within the community. The project is running until May 18th.
