Construction crews building new high school told to adhere to noise bylaw

Parry Sound council has denied a noise exemption request from the Near North District School Board.

According to town officials, several noise complaints were received regarding the ongoing construction of the new kindergarten to Grade 12 super school, and the school board was warned on multiple occasions to comply with the town’s noise bylaw.

“The noise bylaw has requirements of when you can operate commercial construction activities. Those were not being adhered to,” said Dave Thomspon, director of development and protective services. “That is the concern of the bylaw department. There are rules in place that are not being adhered to.”

School board officials applied for a noise exemption from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through Sept 1.

This request was denied by town council on May 7.

“We really don’t want the high school to take longer than possible… but to live there and have to go through an entire summer of unrestricted sound pollution is unreasonable,” said Coun. George Ashford.

He suggested the school board re-apply with a “narrower” time frame or wait until the fall.
