Parry Sound Fire Department education campaign to take place May 11

Members of the Parry Sound Fire Department will be going door-to-door on the morning of May 11 to educate the public on fire safety.

Fire Prevention Officer John Tuck says firefighters will be reminding residents to check their smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

“Test and make sure they are working,” said Tuck. “It’s really important to have working smoke and CO2 alarms in your home. If a fire breaks out you have about two minutes to get out and, unfortunately, the fire department is going to be about seven minutes responding. So really (a working alarm) is what’s going to save your life.”

Firefighters will have a limited supply of smoke and CO2 alarms they’ll be handing out to those in need, along with a supply of batteries.

Tuck says residents should get in the habit of changing the batteries in their smoke and CO2 alarms twice a year when the clocks fall back and spring forward.
