Hands celebrating Autism Awareness Day with in-person events

Hands the Family Health Network is inviting the public to celebrate with them on World Autism Awareness Day.

On April 2 from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., the agency will hold in-person events in its Parry Sound office at 2 May Street, as well its locations in Bracebridge, North Bay, and Timmins.

Bob Pipe, Senior Communications Specialist, says they’re excited to open their doors and celebrate with everyone.

“Kids can look forward to a lot of fun,” says Pipe. “There’s going to be games, activities, prizes, refreshments. And there’ll also be resources there for families to learn a little bit more about autism, and the services that we have available here at Hands to help them on their autism journey.”

According to Pipe, the events are not just for people with autism and their families. With roughly one in every 50 Canadian youth diagnosed with autism, he says it’s important that everyone can celebrate what makes us unique.

“Awareness is an important step. I think many people are aware that autism exists, but it’s important to have these events so that we can help bring acceptance, equity, access, and empowerment,” says Pipe. “People with autism, they all bring their own unique gifts and challenges. They’re their own people. That’s how we approach things. Everybody’s unique in their own way, and I think it’s important we celebrate that individuality.”
