‘We are in a good place’: Recreation and Cultural Centre project on target and under budget

The West Parry Sound Recreation and Cultural Centre project is on target and on track to be at the lower end of its $36.3 million dollar budget.

Project manager Andrew Gordon provided an update on the project at a board meeting on March 13.

“We are maintaining the ability to be on the lower end of the budget, and we have not committed one dollar of contingency money,” said Gordon. “So, we are in a good place, a place that we have worked hard to achieve, and we appear to be hitting (our) goals at this time.”

According to Gordon, the building design is fully developed, and the procurement process is close to 70 per cent complete. Two tender packages are awaiting final approval, and a third package will be tendered later this month.

Various applications and permits have been filed and a purchase agreement is in place for the lot at 44 Joseph Street.

Gordon indicated sitework could begin in mid-May, and construction of the recreation and cultural center could be complete by winter of 2026, well before its funding deadline.

Most of the funding for the capital project (73 per cent) is being provided through an Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) Grant, while the remainder (27 per cent) will come from the partnering municipalities.

The $23.3 million dollars the government committed to the project must be spent by March 2027.
