Should Seguin Township businesses be allowed to open on holidays?

Seguin Township is considering a bylaw which would allow retail businesses in the community to open on holidays.

Currently, provincial legislation requires retail businesses be closed on nine holidays each year – New Year’s Day, Family Day, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Labour Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day, among others.

However, municipalities can enact a bylaw stating that these mandatory closures do not apply.

Seguin officials say a bylaw was drafted after staff received inquiries from retail businesses in the community.

A public meeting was held on March 4. Council will discuss the bylaw at an upcoming meeting.
