Police asking residents to not ‘ghost on safety this Halloween’

The Ontario Provincial Police wants you to keep Halloween “spooky, yet safe.”

Bill Dickson, Acting Manager of Media Relations, says safety on Halloween night involves trick-or-treaters, parents, and drivers.

He recommends trick-or-treaters stick to the sidewalk and use a crosswalk to get to the other side of the road.

Dickson suggests setting up a plan detailing your trick-or-treating route, ensuring the way to get from house to house is safe.

He asks parents to make sure kids are dressed in bright colours to make sure they’re visible to drivers and ensure masks don’t obstruct their vision. He adds to make sure someone is always keeping an eye on the trick-or-treaters.

Dickson points out that, under no circumstances, should anyone go in someone’s home or car to get candy.

For drivers, Dickson says they should expect to see more pedestrians running around so Dickson says they should be alert and drive slowly.
