Parry Sound backing NOSM’s request for increased annual funding

Parry Sound is calling on the province to up the Northern Ontario School of Medicine’s annual base funding by $4 million.

Town council unanimously carried a motion on Tuesday “strongly requesting” Ontario grant NOSM University’s request for the permanent increase before the end of this fiscal year.

According to council, the increase in funding will help NOSM stay true to its mandate of improving the health of Northern Ontarians. A mandate that council says was originally established by the Conservative Government in response to the needs of Northern municipalities.

According to Parry Sound Mayor Jami e McGarvey, this motion comes at a time when the town recognizes the urgent need for physicians in Northern Ontario as it is experiencing a shortage of trained physicians and specialist physicians.

A copy of the motion was sent to the province.
