Fort Erie, Archipelago, and now Parry Sound calling for provincial regulation of BnB-type short term rentals

Parry Sound has joined Fort Erie and The Archipelago in calling for increased provincial regulations on short term rentals.

Town Council is asking the Ontario Government to establish a regulatory framework requiring digital platforms like Airbnb and VRBO to fall in line with municipal laws.

According to council, that framework would include requiring owners using those platforms to comply with municipal planning and licensing regulations as well as preventing advertising of properties that are not registered with the relevant municipality.

In addition, town officials say the framework would provide a contact with the platform to ensure ongoing and effective communications with provincial and municipal governments.

The motion, carried on Tuesday, also calls on the province to work with municipalities to address situations in which long term housing stock has been lost to corporate ownership of short-term rental properties.

A copy of the resolution was also forwarded to the province, the Association of Municipalities of Ontario and all municipalities in Ontario.
