Parry Sound raises Residential schools Survivors’ Flag marking start of a week of remembrance

Parry Sound Mayor Jamie McGarvey marked the start of a week of remembrance on Monday by raising the residential schools Survivors’ Flag at the Town office.

Town officials say the week will culminate on Friday with the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. According to a release, the flag-raising ceremony was accompanied by drumming from members of the Parry Sound Friendship Centre.

According to officials, the Survivors’ Flag, released this year by the National Centre for Truth & Reconciliation, is an expression of remembrance meant to honour residential school Survivors and all the lives and communities impacted by the residential school system in Canada. Each element depicted on the flag was carefully selected by Survivors from across Canada, who were consulted in the flag’s creation.
