No new COVID-19 cases, first case of Gamma variant identified from Parry Sound

The local health unit made no change to the District of Parry Sound’s COVID-19 case count over the weekend.

Parry Sound remains at no active cases for the fifth consecutive day with one previously reported case confirmed to be the Gamma variant of concern originally found in Brazil.

This marks the first case of the Gamma variant from Parry Sound and the second case region-wide.

Last week the health unit reported a Parry Sound case screened positive for the Delta variant originally found in India, also the district’s first.

Eight cases and six recoveries were reported from Nipissing placing that district at 28 active cases, two of which in hospital.

As of Friday, 70 percent of the region’s adults have received their first shot of a COVID-19 vaccine and 11 percent are fully inoculated.
