Simplified, quicker permits part of Seguin building boom

SEGUIN, ON – The first quarter of 2019 has been a busy building period for Seguin Township.

In a report released earlier this week, construction starts in the first four months topped $4.27 million, which is a 77 per cent increase over the same period last year and the highest in a decade.

Typically permit data is used as an indicator of the relative state of a region’s economic and construction health.

“In the first quarter of 2019, 82 per cent of building permit applications were processed within ten days,” said Mark Vandermeer, Seguin’s Chief Building Official. “This is a major improvement over the same period last year, and we are pleased to be providing a better customer service experience to our ratepayers.”

The Township says a simplified permit process and the resulting speed of permit approvals have helped push the industry.

“Over the last year, staff has put resources into educating contractors and the general public about the process and flow of the permit application process,” said Ann MacDiarmid, Mayor of Seguin Township.  “We are beginning to see applications coming into the building department that are more complete, minimizing the ‘back-and-forth’ between the permit applicant and staff, leading to more efficient service, and more applications being processed more quickly.”

The township is asking anyone who is considering a construction project in the area to check out its website for more information.
