Carling grandfather, activist asking for help with legal fees

A grandfather and activist from Carling is asking for the public’s help with his legal fees.

Terry Christenson was in British Columbia earlier this week protesting the Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion.

According to the Toronto Star, the 71-year-old climbed 100 feet up a tree in Burnaby’s Westridge Marine spending Monday night there. He also removed a device that’s designed to keep eagles from making a nest in the tree. Companies install the devices because if an eagle nested they wouldn’t be allowed to chop it down.

Christenson intended to stay in the tree for a week, but police arrested him on Tuesday afternoon. He rappelled down the tree himself because he wanted to ensure the safety of himself and the police.

A member of Greenpeace since 2006, Christenson is no stranger to demonstrations.

He took part in a protest against a Russian offshore oil rig in September of 2013 and climbed a tree at Burnaby’s Westridge Marine Terminal, also to protest Trans Mountain, in April of 2018.

Christenson has set up a GoFundMe account where people who support him can make donations. He says that his expenses total $20,000 over the last 14 months.  His fundraising target is $5,000.

You can contribute to his GoFundMe here.
