OPP nail seven in local distracted driving campaign

The West Parry Sound OPP has released its distracted driving campaign results.

Distracted driving is any activity which takes a driver’s attention away from the road. The law makes it illegal for drivers to talk, text, dial or email using a hand-held phone, or other hand-held communications and entertainment device.

Officers were out cracking down on that kind of behaviour between March 11th and March 17th. During that time seven drivers were charged. People caught driving while distracted face fines of up to $1,000, a three-day licence suspension and three demerit points if convicted.

The OPP says drivers need to keep cell phones out of sight and pull over if they need to make a call or check a message. Distracted driving is the number one cause of death on Ontario’s roads according to police statistics.
