CMHA offers free training in suicide prevention

Canadian Mental Health Association of Muskoka-Parry Sound is offering a free training course.

The Fishing Derby, in memory of Dr Rob Stevens, has donated funds to CMHA in order to help organise SafeTALK – a suicide intervention course that is offered to anyone 15-years-old or older and is a leader of an organized sport, club or facilitator of any youth organization in Parry Sound District.

“SafeTalk helps expand the reach of suicide intervention in the community and I think everybody should take a course like this so that you could help someone you love or even someone you know,” said Jackie Vincent, resource development coordinator with CMHA Muskoka-Parry Sound. “Its a great tool for people who want to become alert to the dangers of suicide.”

SafeTALK helps participants recognize a person with thoughts of suicide and connect them with resources that can help them in choosing to live. Participants do not need to have any prior formal training to attend.

There are 30 spots available to learn the SafeTALK steps, contact Jackie Vincent at 1-800-245-5036 or email her at [email protected].
