Sunset Bell Service set to Commemorate Veterans

November 11th will mark the 100th anniversary of the First World War.

The Royal Canadian Legion will assist in commemorating the historical event through the introduction of a Bells of Peace Initiative to honour through remembrance, the Armistice of 1918. The initiative will be taking place in many townships worldwide.

The general concept derives from the use of bells as a celebratory announcement that the war had ended. This was common at the end of both WWI and WWII.  The Legion Ontario Command says it’s their intent to have every bell in every community across Canada to ring 100 times at sunset.

The Pointe au Baril Florence United Church is also hosting a bell ringing ceremony at 6:00pm.

Joan Emery is on the Board of Directors at the Pointe au Baril Florence Church and she says “it will be special for families of veterans and special for the world.”

The bell service at the church is set to begin at 6:00pm on Sunday.
