Sunday Update – Parry Sound 33 Fire

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is indicating a bit of bright news in relation to the Parry Sound 33 fire.

“The fire is suppressed nicely along the Key River,” according to a release from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.

Despite its name, the actual fire is still some 75 km north of the Town of Parry Sound, bounded by Georgian Bay on the west, and along the Key River. The community of Killarney was evacuated mid-week, with 400 residents leaving their belongings and homes. Residents from Henvey Inlet First Nation have been away for two weeks now and had their evacuation order extended until August 1oth.

According to the MNRF report “crews continued to consolidate hose lines in preparation for increased burning conditions Sunday.” “Crews have utilized over 300,000 feet of hose in fire suppression and structure protection, which is equivalent to 167 CN Towers” the report says. The fire is sitting 11,362 hectares as of Sunday afternoon and is still listed by the MNRF as “not under control”, and is the fourth largest forest fire in the province.
