Fire prevention officers are reminding cottage country residents to “stand by your pan” and “watch what you heat”

Careless cooking is the number one cause of injuries in Ontario related to fires. That’s according to Fire Prevention Officer Rob King in response to three house fires in cottage country over the past two weeks that were caused by inattentive cooking.

King says that this is an issue they are trying to curb by creating catchy phrases that he hopes people will remember while making a meal.

According to officials, it doesn’t matter what you’re cooking, or how you’re cooking it; every kitchen has it’s share of combustible items, like cabinets above or below. King says that’s what creates large-damage kitchen fires that could lead to disaster.

According to statistics from the Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management, there is an average of 1,284 cooking fires a year in Ontario.

King reminds cottage country residents to make sure their fire alarms are on and working. He also reminds locals to have a practiced escape plan in case of emergency.
