OPP want the waterways to be safe this holiday weekend

OPP want the waterways to be safe this Victoria Day long weekend.  In 2013 23 fatalities occurred in OPP policed waterways. 20 of those individuals killed were not wearing a life jacket or PFD.  Boaters are reminded to be aware of those enjoying other water activities such as swimming and fishing and to reduce speed to 10 km/h when travelling within 30 meters of a shoreline.  In addition, all persons operating a power-driven boat are required by law to have a Marine Operator’s Competency Card.  For more information on boat safety, equipment requirements for your boat and recreational boating laws visit www.boatingsafety.gc.ca.
