MNRF says know your target heading into moose hunting season

Officials are reminding you to properly identify your target before shooting.

Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry Conservation Officer Shane Brownlee says, every year, moose that were not properly identified are shot by mistake. He says there are rules for what type of moose you can hunt, in order to manage the local populations. Brownlee says calves stand about four feet high at the shoulder and weigh up to 400 pounds. He says there are also other features to help you properly identify a calf.

Brownlee says adult moose will be much bigger.

He says it’s important to know these differences and know what you are allowed to hunt. If you shoot the wrong type of moose, Browlnee says you need to report it by calling 1-877-847-7667. You will still be fined for reporting it, but Brownlee says the penalty will be heavier if you don’t.

Moose hunting season starts on a Saturday in Parry Sound and will run until October 27th.
