Over 6,000 collisions involving wildlife this year in Ontario

The OPP wants the public to keep their eyes out for wildlife while driving this autumn.

The provincial police service says there have been upwards of 6,000 accidents on provincially patrolled roads involving wildlife this year.

One fatality and 300 injuries have resulted from these collisions.

According to the OPP spring and fall are when wildlife is most active, and is likeliest to show up on roads.

The OPP has a number of tips to lessen the risk of hitting wildlife on the road:

  • Watch your speed when driving at night, slowing your speed will give you more time to react
  • Brake firmly if you see an animal standing or crossing the road
  • Avoid swerving if possible as this can cause a loss of control of your vehicle and lead to a more serious accident
  • If you’re able to avoid hitting a large animal like a deer, moose or bear, do so, but make sure there is no oncoming traffic, or space on the shoulders to perform a maneuver around the animal
