Province cracking down on distracted driving

The Ministry of Transportation wants new penalties for distracted and careless driving in Ontario.

The MTO says new legislation will be introduced this fall that will include tougher penalties for distracted driving and for failing to yield to pedestrians.

The province is also looking into using cameras on school buses to catch drivers that illegally pass them while at a stop.

According to the province, a person is killed on an Ontario road every 17 hours. Pedestrians and cyclists make up a quarter of all car-related deaths in the province.
