False 9-1-1 call on the rise in West Parry Sound

Local police are concerned with an increase in false 9-1-1 calls.  The West Parry Sound OPP says  9-1-1 is for police, fire or medical emergencies when someone’s health, safety or property is in jeopardy or a crime is in progress.  In 2013 from January to March, the West Parry Sound detachment received 147 9-1-1 calls and during the same months this year that number increased to 210 within the district.  About 75% of these calls were placed in error, pocket dials, misdials or pranks and because police must respond to every 9-1-1 call, misuse and abuse of 9-1-1 could result in a risk to the safety of people who may need urgent help.  Cell phone users are encouraged to carry their phone in holster and make sure the keypad is locked to help reduce the number of pocket dials.  The OPP reminds you that 1-888-310-1122 is available 24/7 for non-emergency calls for service in Ontario.
