OPP encourage safe activities this holiday weekend

Police are reminding everyone to know the risks of recreational activities to safely enjoy the outdoors.  West Parry Sound OPP says the bodies of water in our area have not had the usual cold temperatures to allow safe ice to form and encourage residents across the district to stay off the ice because it’s not safe.  Detachment Commander Staff Sergeant Ron Campbell says the weather this winter has been very mild thus it is not safe as ice conditions can vary and it’s too unreliable to risk anyone’s safety.  Ice that has formed over flowing water, springs, pressure cracks, old ice holes or around the mouths of rivers and streams can be weaker as ice can erode from the bottom up leaving no obvious warning signs.  Officers want everyone to assess and manage the risks in order to have a safe and enjoyable Family Day Weekend.
