The health unit encouraging caution with flood waters

With the risk of flooding still present, the health unit wants people to continue being safe.

The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit is asking people to treat the risk of flooding with the caution and care it deserves. Although the risk of flooding has been in the area for a while, the health unit is suggesting that residents watch water levels and check their drinking water.

According to the health unit, with the forecasted rain for the area, more local areas are expected to be dealing with flooding. That chance of flooding can be dangerous depending on a number of factors. Those being where the water is coming from, how much water comes, and how quickly it can be removed.

Generally speaking, anyone that is not connected to the municipal drinking water needs to be aware that overland flooding could impact your drinking water. If anyone is on a well, before using that water, it is important to check that the well is not damaged. It is also a good idea to look into the well after floodwaters make their way through to make sure there is no debris in the well water. Debris potentially carries with it dangerous and harmful sediment.

Once the flooding is gone, it is also a good idea to get your water tested before using it.

For cleaning up your home after flooding, the health unit suggests that any cleaning be done with appropriate protective equipment like gloves and rubber boots. In terms of food, the health unit says that anything that has come in contact with floodwaters should be thrown away.
