Open Streets Parry Sound

Parry Sound will be closing James Street downtown and opening it up to pedestrians.

The event is called Open Streets and takes place September 15th. The concept originated in Bogota, Colombia but has spread to places like Toronto, and even recently, Huntsville, Ontario.

What happens is streets are closed to car traffic, and pedestrians, cyclists, rollerbladers, and skateboarders enjoy the use of the roadway. Merchants also spread out a  bit to connect with potential shoppers.

There will be demonstrations as well, with the Georgian Jumpers jump rope team and the Parry Sound Figure Skating club turning out to show people what they do.

For the smaller pedestrians, the Parry Sound Fire Department will keep things cool with the giant sprinkler on the ladder truck deployed.

Kids can also play with sidewalk chalk or a giant checkers game.

It takes place between 9 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

Just after the street reopens there will be a performance by the OPP Golden Helmet Motorcycle precision team.
