Whitestone council is set to discuss the latest draft of the municipality’s new official plan, which proposes to enhance the rules and requirements around waterfront development, and better protect cultural heritage resources.
At a special meeting on July 15, council will discuss the overarching document, which guides decisions on where new homes and businesses can be located, how lakes, rivers, and natural areas are protected, and how the region plans for the future.
Much of the new language inserted into the document revolves around giving council, and the municipality additional tools and authority to control waterfront development, and ensure the protection of the natural environment.
The updated Plan encourages increased setbacks of large-scale development from the shoreline, and restricts the alteration of both physical and ecological features of lands designation Environmental Protection Area (EPA). It also gives council the ability to redesignate lands EPA, when they see fit.
