Council approves crossing guard for Isabella-Gibson Street intersection

Parry Sound council has approved a crossing guard for the Isabella and Gibson Street intersection.

Council approved a staff recommendation at a meeting on Oct. 6, following a report from Manager of Bylaw Enforcement Zach Emberson.

Emberson said staff assessed the intersection between 8:15 and 8:45 a.m. and 3:00 and 3:35 p.m. over the course of three days. During which, an average of 218 vehicles and 20 students crossed through the intersection during each half hour period.

Staff also noted one to two near misses or unsafe interactions during each of the six observation periods.

“Based on what staff discovered there it is recommended that a crossing guard would alleviate concerns and make that intersection safe for students to cross,” said Emberson.

The recommendation received unanimous council approval.

According to Emberson, the new position is expected to cost around $4,000 per year.
