Construction of the new Parry Sound JK-12 school continues to advance and is “moving steadily toward completion.”
That’s according to Director of Education Jay McJanet, who provided an update on the ongoing construction project on May 1.
In the update McJanet stated that a number of key areas are now complete or well underway. Lobby ceilings and the cafetorium are complete. The hex pod electrical hook-ups and inspections are complete and installation of heating and air condition units will follow upon delivery. Exterior cladding is underway, with all masonry work on track for completion by June. Cleaning of classroom spaces is also underway, and classroom setup has begun on the second floor with furniture being installed.
Installation of doors separating the elementary and secondary areas will be completed by Aug. 1, according to McJanet, who said the school will have separate, controlled entrances for the elementary and secondary students, as well as a dedicated entrance for child care and early education.
Additional spaces, including the new elementary library and office, are in progress. Some Indigenous elements will be completed for June, with remaining elements finalized by September.
McJanet also stated that deficiencies from the original contractor are expected to be resolved by September. Final cleaning and classroom setup will continue right up until opening day.
The tender for abatement and demolition of the existing school closed on April 29. A company will be selected in the near future and work will follow.
