Emergency Preparedness Week runs May 3 to 9 across Parry Sound district

Municipalities across the West Parry Sound District are recognizing and promoting Emergency Preparedness Week, which runs May 3 to 9.

The initiative is a national awareness campaign that encourages residents to take action to ensure they are prepared to protect themselves, their families and their community during an emergency.

This year, the provincial theme is Prepared Together.

With the region prone to severe weather and power outages, officials said a good way for residents to be prepared is to learn the specific risks facing the community.

Officials said being ready means knowing how to handle common outages as well as rarer emergency scenarios.

According to officials, having a plan can help residents know what to do when an emergency occurs, and they encourage people to practice it regularly with everyone in the household.

Officials also said residents should prepare and regularly update their emergency kits, ensuring they have basic supplies like batteries, essential medications, snacks and water to support themselves and their families for an extended period.
