Hydro One issues safety tips as rain continues across Parry Sound

With active flooding throughout the region, and rain forecasted to continue over the coming days, Hydro One is offering tips on how residents can stay safe.

According to Bianca Pizzo, media relations officer with Hydro One, they want to make sure customers, especially those in flood-prone areas, stay safe at home.

“Any time there’s weather like this forecasted, it’s really critical to ensure that you and your family are prepared in case of an emergency or extended power outage by preparing your emergency kit and keeping it somewhere in your home that is accessible and dry,” she said.

To help prevent flooding, Pizzo said residents should clear debris from gutters, eavestroughs, and downspouts. She said those with a sump pump should maintain it regularly to ensure it’s ready when needed and consider a backup power source, such as a battery or generator.

If flooding occurs and water reaches outlets, heaters, or the furnace, Pizzo warned people to stay out of those flooded areas until the power has been disconnected, as “water and electricity do not mix.” She said in the event of flooding at a home, residents should call 1-800-434-1235 to have Hydro One crews safely shut off the power.

“If people are outside, please stay away from ground-level electrical equipment like pad-mount transformers,” she said. “We’re always monitoring our infrastructure to ensure that it’s safe.”

In the event of a power outage, Pizzo also said people should make sure their appliances, such as the oven, are off so there’s no chance of accidents when the power returns.
