Council throws its support behind Hockey Day in Parry Sound

Parry Sound council has penned a letter of support backing the creation of “Hockey Day” in town.

The event, planned for the end of march, is a joint effort put together by the Rotary Club of Parry Sound and the Downtown Parry Sound Business Association (DBA).

The Mayor and councillors carried the motion for support on Tuesday, adding the town will be pleased to assist the Hockey Day in Parry Sound Committee with all aspects of event planning.

That includes the use of the Bobby Orr Community Centre leading up to and on the day of the event, as well as assisting with Game Ticket Sales.

Councillor Paul Borneman says he hopes not only the town but the other municipalities in the area will jump on board and help the Rotary Club and the DBA with their process.

The letter of support is meant to accompany a Heritage Grant application.

According to council, preliminary event plans for Hockey Day include a Maple Leaf’s NHL Alumni Game, local Parry Sound Hockey Club hosted activities and public skating.

Officials say the event is planned for the shoulder season and will add a new, positive, family-fun activity during the end of March.

According to the letter of support, the event extends the winter tourism season and brings residents and visitors together in Parry Sound to celebrate all things Parry Sound Hockey.
