Response to Wednesday’s broken gas line was “vast, extensive and successful” says Director of Protective Services

A broken gas line in downtown Parry Sound last week was rectified following the deployment of a “vast amount” of town resources.

Dave Thompson, the town’s Director of Emergency and Protective Services, says construction was behind the break in the gas line.

“It just reiterates the need to be careful when you’re excavating, and to pay very close attention to locates and to ensure that you have all the information available to you when you are working anywhere on your own property, to make sure that the environment stays safe for everyone else in the area,” he says.

Thompson says Public Works staff was present at the location of leak Wednesday evening.

“There were many Enbridge trucks on scene. Lakeland Hydro had to attend to shut off power to a certain section of town,” says Thompson.“We had to remove a significant number of people from upstairs apartments throughout the downtown core and have them go to someplace safe while the situation was rectified. As well as the traffic disruption in closing down the Seguin Street Bridge and the entire Miller Street area .”

According to Thompson the situation was made a little more difficult because police and EMS were also involved in separate incidents in the area at the exact same time.

“So, as you can imagine it was hectic and resource heavy and everyone really had to pull together and work together and everyone did. It was an excellent response with a great deal of cooperation, and it was managed successfully,” he says.
