$10 billion settlement proposed for Robinson Huron Treaty annuities case

A proposed settlement for the ongoing Robinson-Huron Treaty annuities case was revealed on Saturday (June 17).

Officials with the Robinson Huron Treaty Litigation Fund say the new proposal comes with a $10 billion dollar settlement for past losses with one half coming from Canada and the other from Ontario.

The next step will see the First Nations moving forward with a community engagement process, including consultations with First Nation members and beneficiaries to provide accurate information about the proposed settlement.

Officials say these consultations will be led by Harry S. LaForme. Laforme was appointed by the Robinson Huron Treaty Litigation Fund to the Office of Mizhinawe for the Robinson Huron Treaty First Nations.

LaForme is expected to prepare a report and recommendations based on these consultations for the Robinson Huron Chiefs and Trustees within the next six to eight months.

Before the deal is finalized it will still need to get internal approval from both the federal and provincial governments.

Canada, Ontario and the 21 Robinson Huron Treaty First Nations, including the Magnetewan, Wasauksing, Shawanaga and Henvey Inlet First Nations, have been working together to try and find common ground outside the courtroom since April of last year.
