YMCA of Simcoe/ Muskoka kicks-off #GivingTuesday

GivingTuesday is a movement to celebrate charitable  giving of all kinds, celebrated on the Tuesday after Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

The YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka is taking part in #GivingTuesdayCA, a global day of philanthropic giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities, and organizations to  to celebrate generosity worldwide. On November 27th, the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka is asking the community to make a pledge to help build healthy communities by making a charitable donation to a charity of your choice or by spreading the organization’s message through social media.

Beginning on GivingTuesday and throughout the month of December, the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka is asking the question “What Would You Give” to help build a healthier community? Last year, the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka supported:

  • Over 5,500 children and youth learn important lifesaving skills through YMCA swim lessons
  • Over 400 families learn, explore and be active together at YMCA Geneva Park Family Camp
  • Over 7,000 children, who received quality child care through the YMCA’s 80 licensed child care facilities
  • Over 27,000 members of the community get healthy by joining their local YMCA health, fitness and aquatics centres, where they benefited from customized programs, recovered from illness or injury, and connected with others in their community
  • Over 1,400 immigrants receive English language training and YMCA settlement services

Brian Shelley, Vice President, YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka spoke to the MyParrySoundNow.com newsroom and explained how this initiative can benefit our neighbors.

“In Parry Sound, the YMCA works with children, youth and adults in a variety of ways, through employment programs, licensed child care, day-camps and health memberships. By donating to the YMCA on Giving Tuesday, you’re helping people in Parry Sound that are your neighbors, access programs that they wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford which allows us all to live a healthy lifestyle and therefore, a healthy community,” Shelley said.

In its fifth year in Canada, GivingTuesday continues to gain traction across the country, with thousands of partner organizations and millions of Canadians expected to take part, supporting the causes they believe in and the communities in which they live.
