Group fined for illegal camping

Summer vacation is over for one group of campers.

The Ministry of Natural Resources is handing $4,000 in fines to four people after catching them camping illegally. Two men from North Bay, a man from Callander and a woman from Powassan were all charged $1,000 for camping on crown land for more than 21 days. The group was camping at the access point to Cassells Lake near Temagami north of Sudbury.

A conservation officer involved in the investigation says the four campers were camping at the same site for over 40 days between June and August. Camping on crown land is restricted to 21 days per year at a single location to allow for more access to popular camping spots and to reduce impact on the environment.
