A Parry Sound resident is calling on council to address the lack of sidewalks in the Louisa Street neighbourhood.
At a meeting on July 6, Amanda Denommé addressed council, advocating for a complete network of sidewalks and pedestrian paths to be constructed in the neighbourhood.
“Our neighbourhood is filled with young families, seniors, people out for exercise. Every single day parents are pushing strollers, there’s kids on bikes, residents walking their dogs, and everyone is forced to share an active roadway with multi-ton personal and commercial vehicles,” she said. “This is a real danger that is severely multiplied by our local terrain of hills, blind curves, and foliage that offer extremely limited visibility.”
According to Denommé, she created a petition and has spent over a dozen hours knocking on doors. So far she has talked to an estimated 72% of the neighbourhood, and received support from 84% of her neighbours.
She plans to share all of her data with council once she finished talking to at least 80 per cent of her neighbours.
She asked council to undertake an immediate pedestrian safety and connectivity audit of the Louisa Street neighbourhood; implement enhanced road safety measures; and allocate capital funding in the upcoming budget to being a phased installation of sidewalks in the neighbourhood.
Council is considering the request.
