Parry Sound is joining another northern community calling for a longer-term solution for film funding.
In July, North Bay City Council pointed out issues with a provincial funding formula only providing incentives for filmmakers planning on using Northern Ontario locations within the next few months or years.
Parry Sound councillors agree this doesn’t fit the mandate of filmmakers from the US who are often looking for locations years in advance. Town officials say film industry spending brought in $25 million in 2016 and about $10 so far this year. Parry Sound was also recently picked as the filming location for a CBC/Netflix production named Northern Rescue.
The town is joining North Bay in calling on the Northern Ontario Heritage Funding Corporation to commit to filming incentives up to 10 years in advance.
