Parry Sound High School celebrates Indigenous Day

Tomorrow is National Indigenous Peoples Day. Every First Nation celebrates the day differently, but common traditions include a sunrise ceremony, a feast and fireworks.

Parry Sound High School teacher and member of Wasauksing First Nation, Johna Hupfield says indigenous students have created banners to respect land and water. Students and teachers can purchase the artwork and help support next year’s pow wow council. Students have also helped create a drum song to replace O Canada for Indigenous Day. Parry Sound High School student and member of Shawanaga First Nation, Taylor Judge says Indigenous Day is about celebrating survival:

Hupfield suggests spending the day learning and reflecting:

The day has been celebrated nationally since 1996. Judge says it took the government too long:

Hupfield says students do not have exams tomorrow or Friday allowing them to celebrate the day with family and friends.

Anishinaabe artist and land activist, Isaac Murdoch works with students.
