Ontario EcoSchools have awarded two local elementary schools gold certification

Two local schools have been gold certified by Ontario EcoSchools.  Over the past couple of weeks, Nobel Public School and Humphrey Public School received gold certification for their environmental accomplishments.

At Nobel Public School, they have an EcoTeam made up of students and a teacher which have worked to implement Energy Conservation and Waste Minimization practices such as litterless and lightless lunches and School Grounds Greening projects like gardens, beehives, and bird feeders.

In Humphrey Public School, they also have an EcoTeam and some of the projects that make an Eco difference include the creation of a butterfly garden, taking inventory of the garbage created by the school in a day, litterless lunches, and the investigation of energy use at the school.  They also created a community vegetable garden, investigated bees and made bee hotels, spread milkweed “bombs” around the community, and repurposed items that would normally be thrown out.

Ontario EcoSchools is an environmental education and certification program for grades K-12 that helps school communities develop both ecological literacy and environmental practices to become environmentally responsible citizens and reduce the environmental footprint of schools.
