Seguin Townshop’s corporate greenhouse gas emissions have decreased by less than one per cent over the past decade.
That’s according to a new report on the Township’s corporate energy and emissions, which was presented to council at a meeting on Sept. 21.
The report states that the Township’s GHG emissions have only decreased by 0.6 per cent compared to the 2016 baseline. Despite this reduction, officials said energy expenditures have increased more than 53 per cent – rising by more than $286,000 – due to rising costs of fossil fuels and volatile market conditions.
According to officials, increased diesel usage due to more required snow plowing and space heating led to a jump in emissions last year.
The municipality had reduced its GHG emissions by an average of 15 per cent over a year-over-year period ending in 2024, prior to the 2025 spike.
Seguin officials are still aiming to reduce corporate GHG emissions 30 per cent by 2030 and achieve net zero by 2050.
