Two local high school students have been named as recipients of a prestigious scholarship.
Parry Sound High School student Ceci Martens has been awarded a Schulich Leader Award, valued at $100,000.
Officials say the scholarship, geared towards students in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, not only provides significant financial support to winners, but also connects them with a network of mentors within their fields of study.
Every year, 1,500 nominees are selected from a pool of more than 300,000 applicants. However, only 100 scholarships are handed out.
Martens will be attending McMaster University and studying mathematics and statistics, with the hope of pursing a career in mathematics and cryptography. She plans to work in encryption, keeping personal digital information safe.

PSHS student Paige West has been selected as a recipient of the Schulich Builders Award for students pursing a post-secondary education in the skilled trades. West is the first PSHS student to ever win the award.
The award, valued at $40,000, is intended to help combat the shortage of skilled trades workers in Ontario and amplify their importance and value to the community.
West will be attending Cambrian College in Sudbury in the fall to study in the Electrical Engineering Technician program.
Every year, 120 Schulich Builders Awards are handed out to high school students across the province.
