Free skate for mental health at BOCC Jan. 24

A free community skate event in support of mental wellness is back in Parry Sound for another year.

Top Shelf for Mental Health runs Jan. 24 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Bobby Orr Community Centre.

Organizer Terry-Lynn Stevens says the event is in memory of her late husband, Dr. Rob Stevens, who passed away by suicide in 2017. She says several mental health agencies will be present, with free games and takeaways for anyone stopping by, as well as former Team Canada hockey player Kendra Fisher.

“She is going to share with us her journey with mental illness, which cost her a dream of playing in the Olympics,” says Stevens. “She’s going to be lacing up her skates and skating with us tonight, as well as talking through that hour-long skate.”

Stevens says the event is a great way to learn more about mental health, not to mention getting in some ice time.

“This is an event for young and old,” says Stevens. “Come on out, lace up your skates. If you don’t have skates, just come on out and be a part of this fun, fantastic, and exciting event tonight.”
