West Parry Sound’s Fire Danger Rating goes down after substantial rain over the weekend

The region’s Fire Danger Rating is now at moderate.

West Parry Sound Fire Coordinator Gord Harrison says as much as we all hate to see the nice weather end, the cooler weather that came in late last week was enough to drop the rating back.

“And I expect it’s actually down to low right now. There’s just a substantial amount of rain and with more rain in the forecast. From the fire danger rating’s [perspective] that’s very good place to be,” he says.

Harrison says things can change quickly and most people don’t realize that if they get a dry, windy day, that can change the fire danger rating and increase the fire risk right away.

“So just keep an eye on where the fire danger rating is, don’t burn when it’s windy and don’t have your campfire when it’s windy. But as long as you’ve got calm days throughout the winter, burning is a pretty safe activity,” he says.
