Parry Sound formally asking Ottawa to help maintain federally owned dock

Parry Sound is calling on the federal government to help bear the burden of maintaining the Town Dock.

Town council passed a motion on Tuesday formally asking the  government to properly maintain and invest in the federal infrastructure of the Dock through upgrades and maintenance.

According to Mayor Jamie McGarvey the Town Dock is owned by the feds with the town holding a head lease for it.

McGarvey says Ottawa gets a payment of the gross revenues while the municipality runs a net deficit to operate it and keep it at a minimum maintenance level.

In addition, he says use has gone up with the emergence of the Great Lakes Cruise Ship Industry over the last few years, something he says has led to increased deterioration.

Council says the feds chipping in would allow for better usage of the facility, opening the door for even more economic benefits to the broader Great Lakes area without Parry Sound having to foot the bill.

The resolution was also sent to the Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister as well as Parry Sound Muskoka MP Scott Aitchison.
