A GoFundMe has been launched to help a local well-known family.
According to friends of the family, who organized the fundraiser, over the years, Lauren and Kris Kaster have been very involved in the Parry Sound and Magnetawan communities.
They have four children, ten-year-old Hannah, eight-year-old Kohl, five-year-old Bridget and three-year-old Paige.
According to the GoFundMe, after being diagnosed in February of last year, Kris had surgery for bladder cancer in August. Less than a month after being told he was clear and on the road to recovery, Kris was back in hospital for back pains, where it was discovered that the bladder cancer was aggressive and had spread.
“A desperate attempt was made to come up with a treatment plan, but unfortunately the cancer was so fast that Kris was only able to complete one cycle of chemotherapy. This leads us to today. Kris has come to the end of his treatment options and has now been switched to comfort care,” reads the page.
The organizers say the family has many questions and unknowns right now, but one thing that is clear is that the Kasters need the community’s help. The page was created on Monday and has raised nearly $4,300 of its $20,000 goal as of noon Tuesday.
“It’s been so hard for Kris to be off work for the last 17+ months. Not only because Kris was doing what he loved at Camp Kahquah, but also because Lauren stays at home and homeschools the kids which means they rely solely on his income,” reads the statement.
The organizers say any donations will help cover expenses for travel to Toronto, hotels, gas, childcare, medication and many more. The friends of the family say any support would, even thoughts and prayers, as the Kasters are going to have many unexpected financial pressures in the next coming days, weeks and months.
