Georgian Bay Biosphere’s Native Plant Fundraiser is live, orders need to be in by 25th

Georgian Bay Biosphere is marking spring with a Native Plant Fundraiser

Laura Peddie, Organizational Manager with the local non-profit, says the event will be held on Saturday, June 10 and all orders need to be in by May 25.

“So the idea [behind] the fundraiser is that we sell native plants, and we have a variety including wildflowers, shrubs, and trees. There’s over 40 species for sale and you can choose online which are best for your property, order them and pick them up June 10. Then all proceeds go towards our conservation and education programs,” she says.

Peddie says among the plants on sale are three different types of milkweeds, which are important for monarch butterflies, Black Eyed Susans, Astors and Wild Strawberry.

“I think the cheapest are around $6 per plant and then the trees of course are the most expensive, but I don’t think that anything is over $16, so it’s really quite reasonable,” she says.

Peddie says native plants are best for the area because they’re naturally grown here, they support local soil and species, including pollinators like honeybees and monarch butterflies that use them for both habitat and food.

She says you can order your plants online at gbbr.ca then on June 10th in both Parry Sound and Port Severn, you can pick up your plants and the Biosphere will e-mail you with information regarding pickup. She says there’s also a delivery option available.
