Georgian Bay Biosphere Doubling Your Impact until May 1st to support Turtle Protection and more

The Georgian Bay Biosphere’s (GBB) annual fundraising campaign coincides with Earth Week this year.

Laura Peddie, GBB’s Organizational Manager, says the Double You Impact campaign sees the local non-profit donations and memberships double until May 1.

“We are so grateful that Maple Leaf Marinas along with eight of their Georgian Bay marinas are generously matching donations and memberships up to $10,000 and Hall Construction, Crofter’s Organic, and Tatham Engineering will match additional donations this month,” Peddie says.

Peddie says the biosphere doesn’t have exact numbers yet on this year’s tally but she’s anticipating a good year. “So, in May we’ll run all the final numbers, but we are really hopeful that this is our biggest yet. We are so grateful to everyone who has donated so far to make that happen,” she says. Peddie says last year GBB raised around $40,000, which they are hoping to exceed this year.

Peddie says the campaign started off as a bake sale and has grown from there. She says Double You Impact has been an annual campaign for at least five years and it’s one of the Biosphere’s most important ones. “It’s important that all the money raised does stay in the community and directly supports our conservation projects like Turtle Protection and a very special program this year called our “State of the Bay” report,” she says.

Peddie says GBB’s biologists are already hard at work planning Turtle Protection. “We work with different municipalities and organizations to help run multiple programs including turtle egg rescue and incubation. Then we release the hatchlings,” she says. As for the “State of the Bay” report, she explains it’s a magazine that GBB produces every five years to show how water quality, fisheries, and the climate are changing, and it’s set to be released this July.

Peddie says if anyone is interested in donating you can go to gbbr.ca/double to make an online donation. She says all donations over $20 receive a charitable tax receipt, and thanks residents for their help in protecting the Georgian Bay.
