50 volunteers needed to help search and rescue team

PARRY SOUND, ON – Anyone looking to make a difference and help their community are being called upon to help police out.

The West Parry Sound region has a need for a bigger land-based, Search and Rescue (SAR) support team. A committee organized an information event in the lounge of Canadore College at 7 p.m. on October 9th.

According to a release from Gord Harrison, Fire Chief for the Township of Carling, 30 to 50 volunteers are needed.

Representatives from the Ontario Search and Rescue Volunteer Association will give an overview of what the position entails and answer any questions.

Volunteers are needed from all across the region. The release said they are looking as far north as Henvey Inlet, south to MacTier, east to Sprucedale, Whitestone and Magnetawan.

Anyone who signs up would go through the three-day course and be accredited for it upon completion. They will then be called on in emergencies by the OPP. There is also a training scenario offered each year to volunteers to maintain their skills.

Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer is asked to attend the information night or contact Gord Harrison with the Township of Carling.
