West Parry Sound OPP supports Overdose Awareness Day

PARRY SOUND, ON – Parry Sound is hosting an Overdose Awareness Day and West Parry Sound OPP will be participating.

The local detachment is joining the Canadian Mental Health Association Parry Sound-Muskoka starting at 11:00am at 60 James Street, Parry Sound.

The police will be there in support of the Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act (GSDOA) and informing the public how the law is meant to work.

The law can protect you even if you’ve taken drugs or have some on and you call for assistance when you see an overdose. Specifically, it provides protection against possessing drugs for your own use or violating conditions of parole, bail, probation or conditional sentencing in drug possession cases.

The OPP make it clear the act has a narrow scope and cannot protect against such things as trafficking illegal drugs, offences other than drug possession, outstanding arrest warrants or violating conditions of parole, bail, probation or conditional sentence for a non-drug possession charge.
